On a recent trip to Canyon Ranch, I had the opportunity to try a fantastic new form of exercise called Gyrokinesis. Led by award winning (2012) Miami Fitness instructor / ballet performer, Paul Thrussell, this popular class is creating a buzz through the fitness community of the resort and beyond.
Gyrokinesis started as a way for dancers to incorporate yoga like moves in training to improve and perfect their dancing performance. This exercise class involves repetitive rhythmic spiral motions designed to move the spine and limbs in a way that maximizes your range of movement in all directions. Most exercise focuses only on movement in simple planes of motion. For example the bicep curl involves just bending and straightening the elbow. Squats allow for bending and straightening the legs while keeping the spine in a specific controlled extended position. These exercises are good for strength, but optimal functioning requires more complex moves. The spiral motions of Gyrokinesis will help improve your flexibility, function and strength in all directions available to you and prevent future impairments in joints and muscles. The repetitive fluid motion used in Gyrokinesis,in opposing directions encourages the release of synovial fluid which is like the WD 40 of joints. Joint lubrication facilitates joint motion and prevents stiffness. Stiff joints can cause dysfunction and osteoarthritis, which is the most common form of arthritis. Doing movement classes like Gyrokinesis helps you stay flexible and pain free. Best of all, Canyon Ranch’s Paul Thrussell makes it so much fun, you will be smiling and enjoying yourself, while your body reaps the exercise rewards.
